BestStart is the umbrella organisation representing over 260 early childhood education and childcare centres from Whangarei to Invercargill. We are the leader in quality early learning education with around 4500 awesome staff. This includes four regional management teams across the country to support our centres.

Just like each of us, each of our centres are different. They are part of their own communities with unique people, places, history and culture. We encourage our centres to build their own identities to ensure they are always highly relevant and engaged with their own community’s culture.

Our size means BestStart can offer staff professional development that many smaller organisations are unable to. We have four amazing regional management teams, within these are Business Managers and Professional Services Managers that care for and support centres to meet the learning needs of all ākonga and the needs of each community. It’s also their passion to support the learning and development of our teaching teams. We also have two national offices, in Tauranga and in Auckland, filled with dedicated and committed specialists to provide support to our centres. We have a great internal shared resource called Te Mātāpuna, where BestStart teachers can find out more about our organisation structure and all our teams across New Zealand. BestStart teachers can also keep an eye on Te Mātāpuna for the latest news, announcements, - as well professional development information and important documents.
BestStart is a registered charity. We are owned by the Wright Family Foundation, also a registered charity.
After meeting the resourcing and development needs of BestStart, surpluses can go to BestStarts supported by the Wright Family Foundation. These include Plunket, The New Zealand Spelling Bee, the Kids’ Lit Quiz, the Graeme Dingle Foundation’s Stars Programme and House of Science (to name just a few).

- We offer relocation assistance to teachers wanting to get a new role in a new town
- We have annual excellence awards each year to celebrate our most successful centres
