BestStart Ponsonby, formerly EduKids Ponsonby, is known for our special character and unique inner city early childhood centre setting. There is a strong sense of community within the centre. With many of our families having long lasting relationships. We’re just a short walk from Richmond Road School in Grey Lynn, and only a few minutes’ drive from Westmere, Herne Bay and Point Chevalier.

The team at BestStart Ponsonby believe our role is to assist children to “grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge, that they can make a valued contribution to society.”

Parents are viewed as the first teacher therefore aspirations and expectations are valued and respected as teachers work closely in partnership with families to ensure that each child reaches their full potential.

Our separate Babies Cottage (3 months – 2 years) is situated in a cosy villa that provides a warm, home-like environment. Every baby has a primary caregiver who takes care of their key care moments, such as nappy changes, feeding and sleeping. Our babies are happy, settled, and thrive in an environment where they are emotionally content. Each child’s routine is individual and our teachers are respectful, following your child’s lead.

The Big House (2-4 years), a renovated villa, is a hive of activity. The Big House provides many different areas of choice for our curious toddlers. There is plenty of space for children both indoors and outdoors that supports both individual and groups of children’s current interests. Teachers are skilled in understanding and getting to know the unique and individual dispositions of each child.

The Workshop (4-5 years) is our boutique transition to school room that caters for 18 children. Workshop children, will gain  Be School Ready skills providing the foundations to give them the best start once they begin their journey at School. Children are taught in a fun and skilled way. There is a focus on supporting children to develop strong social competencies that see them having the necessary social skills.  This contributes to children having a successful transition to school.

We aim to provide an environment where children can experience every opportunity to enhance their learning and development through; encouraging and questioning, scaffolding and extending, fostering of Tuakana/Teina (older/younger) relationships and positive guidance. We believe that children learn best through play and when they engage in experiences they are interested in. We value the importance of discovery, creativity and exploration.

kind words from our parents

Parent

Our son has recently started school and it’s given us cause to reflect on his four years at EduKids in Ponsonby. We can’t speak highly enough of the staff and management at the centre. They have been relentless in their efforts to teach and extend our son. He is a confident boy who is well aware of many of the social norms expected at school and that’s thanks to many of the skills he learned at day care. For example, setting the table and eating together, leading others in a task etc. The teachers, particularly those in The Workshop, identified his interests early and ensured there were always activities to build on them. We have been impressed, right from his days in the Babies Cottage, at just how much care and attention is given to the children by the teaching staff; they really make an effort to get to know them and show genuine interest in their wellbeing. We would thoroughly recommend EduKids Ponsonby to any parent looking for a quality day care.

All concerns and fears went away as we experienced first-hand the fun, kind, compassionate, exciting and engaging manner in which the staff interacted with the kids and the centre was managed. At no time have we ever felt the wellbeing and happiness of our children has been compromised through putting them into day care – and this is an absolute credit to you and the team!

EduKids Ponsonby has such good feel, the separate cottage/houses, play areas, facilities and teachers. We were anxious at first as Ari had been quite shy and could take a while to settle to new environments and people but the staff are wonderful and made the transition as easy as possible for us. The primary carer system works well, Ari is now confident, social and happy.

Our children have attended EduKids for nearly one year but unfortunately will be leaving soon, due to moving out of Auckland. From the moment they started, To their last day they have had such a ball and are always extremely excited to be going to day care each day. The teachers at EduKids are WONDERFUL! We couldn’t fault any of them. They are kind, caring and professional and my children regard them as their friends, which is so cool. Both children have developed so much over this time in many different ways and we love receiving daily reports on what they are up too through StoryPark. We will miss everyone at the Centre and I can’t thank the staff enough for looking after our children so well.
